Quinceañera Symbolism Holds Great Meaning
By: Karen Sullen

From changing shoes to dancing with your court, the Quinceañera celebration is filled with traditions, many of them rooted in your faith.  Through the years, some of the rituals may have faded, but those that remain can hold great meaning for you.  As you decide which traditions to include in your celebration, let's take a look at their purpose.

Tiara and Scepter:  Just as the crown and scepter are symbols of power for royalty, they represent the authority and responsibility gained as you transition into adulthood for the Quinceañera.

Kneeling Pillow:  It symbolizes your faith and submission to God.

Bible:  The bible reminds you to keep God's word in your life to guide you into adulthood.

Ultima Muneca:  Playing with dolls is supposed to be a part of your past, not your future.  This "last doll" is given as a reminder that you must now put away childish things.

Shoes:  Your transition from childhood is symbolized by changing your little girl shoes to those of a woman, allowing you to gracefully step forward into your new life.

Butterflies:  Like the awkward caterpillar transforms into a beautiful butterfly, they represent your graceful transition into womanhood.

Whether or not you are planning a contemporary or traditional celebration, including these items will help make it a memorable occasion for you and your family.
