Choosing Your Quinceañera Colors
by Michael Kabel

    Do you dream in color?

If that seems a strange question, let's put it this way: when you dream of your Quinceañera gown and celebration, what colors do you see?

The color scheme is the most basic part of your fiesta decorations. It's also a central part of the gown you wear and the fashions you choose for your court of honor. A good color scheme can bring an entire ballroom together, and set a mood like perhaps nothing else.

It's a scientific fact that color can change and even determine someone's mood, just by making contact with the eye. With a little color manipulation and a fine eye for detail, you can make your fiesta anything you like, just by splashing the right color in the right places.

Colors for Your Gown & Damas

The colors of your gown also make a statement of style and fashion - not just with their hue, but also with their texture and sheen. The color schemes for 2007 are actually pretty varied, though the most popular Quince dress designs includes lot of shimmering softer colors, like greens and blues. Just the same, darker colors remain popular, including midnight blues and smoldering browns and dark reds. When you select your gown, you should pick a color that complements your skin tone and your hair color. This is pretty much a decision that's left up to personal choice, though your friends can probably help determine which color grades - light or dark - look better on you.

Choosing the damas' gowns is a little trickier. You're picking out the color scheme for your friends and family members. It's best to collaborate with them about what they'll wear. You might settle on a chosen color for all the damas, then allow each to pick out a particular shade. Or, you might have a straightforward uniform color and shade for them all.

Colors for Your Fiesta Decorations

The colors of your decorations should tie into the color of your gown and your damas' gowns. They can complement each other (for example, dark red and warm orange) or they can make counterpoints that set a mood of drama and excitement (yellow and brown, or bright blue with dark green).

Many current fashion trends work in contrast - that is to say, they exploit the appeal of vastly different colors to create an effect of surprise and revelation. You've probably seen some of these color designs on cable home-renovation shows, or in the department stores. (Both make great places to fire your imagination, by the way.)

As you make your final choice, try to imagine how everything will look when it's displayed. Use swatches if you can, seeing how much of one color looks against another, and vice versa. Many colors are great accents to another, though it's not as effective to use them both in equal amounts. When you've made your final decisions, you'll be set to consider the shape and style of your decorations, only this time you'll definitely be "dreaming in color" of your perfect Quinceañera celebration.
