Five Movies For Your Quinceañera Fashions & Decorations
by: Michael Kabel
Most people have a favorite movie, but few ever get the chance to use it for inspiration when they make their debut as a young woman!
As you plan your Quinceanera, you can use your favorite movies as a well of creative resources, drawing the fashions and set decorations to fuel your own decoration schemes. Presented below are five films we think can help you plan a completely elegant yet fun-loving Quince fiesta. You can stay as close to their source material as you like, or simply start your creative juices flowing using their own details.
Titanic (1997)
Who wouldn't love the opulent glamour and timeless Victorian sophistication of Titanic at her fiesta? Kate Winslet’s dressings and gowns are world famous for their elegant beauty.
You can also base your fiesta venue decorations around the stylish parlors and dining halls shown during the film's middle sections. Check out pictures of hotels and ballrooms circa 1900 for similar design and decoration schemes.
Gone With the Wind (1939)
While reproducing the beyond-elaborate gowns worn by Scarlett O'Hara is probably impossible on most budgets, you can still bring the Antebellum style to modern life. Just plan to include skirts and ornate bodices into yours and your damas' gowns. Chambelanes could also wear full tails on their tuxedoes, similar to the gentleman of the era.
As for venue, if you live in the Southeast and most of Texas there's likely an Antebellum house available for nightly rental in your area. They vary in price and luxury, but some also probably offer catering as well.
My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)
This romantic comedy from the 90s is starting to show its age a little, but the designs for the wedding reception hall are still gorgeous. The bridesmaids dresses are sleek and fun without being superficial – so they translate perfectly into damas dresses for a carefree fiesta.
If your fiesta is during the winter months, you may get a special deal on renting a ballroom or space normally used for wedding receptions. Don't be afraid to call them and see if they'll negotiate.
Quinceañera: The Movie (2006)
You'll probably watch this movie anyway, so why not gank a few ideas while you enjoy its charming coming of age story?
Magdalena's gorgeous pink gown is traditional but completely modern and fashionable. Her chambelanes' dark suits and simple lines are elegant and handsome without drawing attention away from their escorts. The deep red of the damas' gowns complements her pink but remains subdued enough to not steal attention from her.
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003)
You're thinking this is a film for your little brother, right? Well it is, except watch near the end of the movie when Aragorn is crowned king. The guests at the ceremony all wear lovely silver-inlaid gowns and robes, and most wear incredibly ornate tiaras and headpieces and bracelets for ornamentation. The costumes are some of the most expensive ever put a film, and they'll likely give you some very creative food for thought.
