Quinceañera 911: How to Deal With Last-Minute Disasters
by: Michael Kabel
You're planning your Quinceañera for months, but sometimes the best-laid plans of every quince anos girl go wrong. It's sad but true: no matter how careful we are, details and sure things sometimes run crazy, out of our control.
But a mistake, accident, or disaster doesn't have to mean catastrophe. You're a young woman now, free to take charge of the details. And besides that, you've got a court of honor and all your padrinos. Every one of them has your back for problem solving.
The following lists common Quinceañera problems and what to do about them. Remember too that forewarned is forearmed. You can eliminate a lot of headache by arranging for "emergency transportation" with your parent or another padrino, so that you can get to places quickly and conveniently if and when the need arises.
The caterer is going to be late or unavailable.
This is a relative problem. The caterer may be only an hour or so late arriving to the venue, which means they're setup time is under a crunch. However, if the caterer cancels altogether, you'll have to scramble.
Find out if your venue recommends a caterer who can work on extremely short notice, or you might contact a restaurant that offers deliveries. You may be able to substitute the restaurant's cuisine for professional catering and no one will know the difference. The caterer can still provide the staff and dinnerware, even if the food isn't ready.
Your gown gets stained
This happens more than most people realize. Lipstick, cola, even makeup finds its way to your immaculate evening gown, leaving a hideous stain that looks as big as the moon.
It's still just a stain!
A lot of stains can be removed with baking soda or soda water. Remember, rubbing the stain will only grind into the dress fabric. Instead, blot the stain away with a strong tissue or handkerchief. It's sometimes tough to remember this important rule in the heat of the moment, but don't panic!
Your court of honor is running late
Give them time, and call them just once to remind them that the arrival time is important. They're still coming, so nagging them is actually just being rude.
One of your misa accessories breaks
This can happen sometimes in the hustle to get to the church in time for the mass. Sometimes the tops of tiaras snap off, or something breaks off the tiara. Kneeling pillows get torn or lose a decorative tassel.
There are few such problems that a bottle of super glue and a needle and thread won't fix. Have them both standing by just in case. You can also find them at most grocery and hardware stores.
When all else fails…
Remember that no one expects you to handle every problem single-handed. You've got your parents, your padrinos, and your chambelanes and damas to lend a helping hand. Don't be too proud to ask for them to pitch in. They're honored to be with you on your special day, so they'll certainly leap to your rescue if needed.
