Knowing When To Say Good Night To Your Quinceañera Guests
by: Michael Kabel

The Quinceañera is an once-in-a-lifetime event, a special day for you especially but also for all your guests. Your celebration will probably go off just exactly like you want, with only tiny little snags, and last as long as you want.

But how long is long enough?

Exit strategies

It's not often discussed, but an important part of being a gracious hostess is knowing when the party should conclude. Guests sometimes feel obligated to stay, or plan the amount of time they spend depending on the party's hours. Part of being a gracious guest, naturally, is not overstaying your welcome.

You've probably planned something like that strategy yourself, or with your parents. For example, when attending a special event, you may have said, "it's supposed to last until six, so we'll stay until five thirty or so." Your guests will probably also choose to bow out gracefully early.

The traditional length of a Quince fiesta… probably isn't realistic.

In times gone by, the Quinceañera fiesta would last well into the night, sometimes even until the sun came up the next morning. But for modern fiestas, expecting guests to stay all night isn't necessarily the most realistic point of view. Even if you hold the fiesta on a Friday or Saturday night, most guests (especially your adult guests) will have difficulty staying past midnight. Parents have to get up in the morning or take their children home, and some people have to go to work - even on weekends.

As you plan your Quince fiesta, remember to set an end time that won't make your guests feel like they have to stay a very long time. This time may be set already, as part of your venue rental agreement. Or, you may have to set it yourself.

To help you plan, consider this guideline:  a good adult party typically lasts four hours or so, and most wedding receptions also go about that same time.

How to say goodnight

In some traditions, the father of the Quinceañera girl offers all the guests a final toast at the end of each evening, to bring all the celebrations to a close. In other examples, the party is simply allowed to wind down on its own.

You should decide how you want your party to end as well as when you think it should conclude. You can even choose to end it yourself, giving a speech to thank guests for coming and reminding them to get home safely.

Planning what comes next

Your Quinceañera celebrations don't have to end with the finale to the fiesta, however. There are any number of after-parties and celebrations to stage for your closest friends and family members, ranging from all night sleepover parties to an exclusive Honor Court morning-after breakfast.

The end or the fiesta is a special, somewhat bittersweet moment. Consider playing as your last song something that sends a message to your guests, thanking them and letting them know how much the evening has meant to you. The song can be classic or modern, so long as your guests understand what you're trying to express.
