The Chambelane's Guide to the Quinceañera

by: Michael Kabel

The Chambelanes at the Quinceañera celebration trace their origins back to the Middle Ages, when princesses were often courted by the best young men of the kingdom. Over time, it became commonplace for a royal court to have several men at the princess’ disposal present at all times.

The modern Chambelane is an honorary role given by a quince anos girl to show her affection and appreciation for their role in her life. Chambelanes can come from all walks of life, regardless of age: adults, teens, and boys.

If you've been selected as a chambelane, understand that the quince anos girl has honored you with a role traditionally given to just seven men in her life. While your role is largely ceremonial, understand too that you're fulfilling a valuable place in her long-awaited Quinceañera celebration.

Get the tuxedo rented early.

This may seem like obvious advice, but a surprising number of chambelanes (and groomsmen at weddings, too) leave renting or reserving their tuxedo until the very last minute. That's a mistake. Think of this proportion as a rule of thumb: the longer you wait, the less choice you'll have and the less availability will be available to you.

Shop online for tuxedo rental deals and coupons, too. Depending on the time of year, the prices will vary. Prom season and the wedding months of summer increase demand and price.

Before renting, check with the quince anos girl for the tuxedo design and what leeway you have in adding extras like tails and cummerbunds.

Shop for a gift you think the quince anos girl will love.

Just as a potential suitor brought gifts to a princess' court in the hopes of winning her love, the modern chambelane brings a gift to show his affection and appreciation on her Quinceañera. If that sounds a little hokey, remember while you shop that you're trying to find a gift for a fifteen-year-old girl.

The perfect gift is probably something your male mind won't immediately think about. Ask a female relative or friend for help. If you can, ask one of her damas, since they're already privy to the quince anos girl's biggest hopes and expectations for the event.

Coordinate with the other chambelanes

This one's pretty simple if you've got quick access to email. Put together a mailing list, and see what the other chambelanes are wearing and giving as gifts. You may be able to put in for a larger gift (iPods are always nice) or coordinate a unique fashion uniform style for your tuxedos.

After the Quinceañera festivities conclude

Take the tuxedo back to the rental store the next day to avoid late charges and fees.

The classy move after the fiesta is to send a thank you note a week or so later. It's a final gesture of gratitude, and lets the quince anos girl stretch out the afterglow of her special celebration a little bit longer. You'll look like a gentleman, and she'll have another keepsake for her memory album.
